Since I, after having been admonished by the establishment, entirely abandon the false opinion that the home work given by our Chinese teacher is not useful, and that it is inefficient. I am never to hold, defend, nor teach in any manner whatever, either orally or in writing, the false doctrine; after having received a notification that the doctrine is contrary to the plan. I have been judged vehemently suspected of heresy, that is, having believed that the Chinese home work is unjustified.

I abjure with sincere heart and unfeigned faith, I curse and detest the published errors and heresies, and generally every error contrary to the Chinese home work. And I swear that for the future I will neither say nor assert in speaking or writing such things.

I also swear and promise to adopt and observe entirely with the penances which have been or may by this home work imposed on me. And if I contravene any of these promises, protests, or oaths I submit myself to the pains and penalties by which the disciplinary arm of the school and other decrees in general.

I Chen Hongjie aforesaid have abjured, sworn, and promised, and hold myself bound as above; and in token of the truth, I have typed it out with my computer: On this day, 13 of July, I, Chen Hongjie, have abjured as above, with my own hand.

We are a notoriously quiet class. We are
to have a capable, understanding, caring,
brilliant and simply wonderful form teacher,
Mr Ong. We are bombarded by many burdens,
homework not the least. Yes, the immense
amount of homework drives us a little crazy, but
we understand that it is beneficial nonetheless
