It is not a matter of natural intelligence. It is a matter of the ability to score well. Although we are far from the best in Singapore, we are arguably the best in Hua Yi.

There are two flaws with the teachers’ comparisons with the other class. First is the flaw that they do more home work than us. My most of my old classmates in 2e2 copied home work from their peers, and this is indistinguishable from genuine effort (until the examination results came out). Secondly, just because we are occasionally not as good as the others, it does not mean that we are generally not as good. The teachers’ comparisons are selective and do not show the full picture. The level rankings for the mid-year are objective, and the message is clear.

We are what we believe, and we must fight for it. Anything which is not pragmatic is a waste of time and simply not worth adopting. It is not about pride. Rather, it is about fighting for what will do us the most good.

We are a notoriously quiet class. We are
to have a capable, understanding, caring,
brilliant and simply wonderful form teacher,
Mr Ong. We are bombarded by many burdens,
homework not the least. Yes, the immense
amount of homework drives us a little crazy, but
we understand that it is beneficial nonetheless
