Fellow classmates!

The year 2006 is nearing its end. It will never be forgotten by us who fought and worked and lived through it. It was the most difficult year of secondary school so far, one that subjected us to a good many tests and examinations. It gave us the task of holding the place which we have earned in the earlier years. It will be the foundation of our final victory next year in the O levels, and we have defended it against the raging storm of our enemies with courage and without wavering. In large part, we succeeded.

Where we have failed in the PSLE we will succeed in the O levels. There is hardly any point in even speaking about it. We survived so brilliantly the trials of hard discipline and authoritarian rule in this concentration camp which we call our school. The days of evil and terror have indeed made us more irritated, but also harder. The misery of school terror is to some degree the mortar that holds us together as a class in the midst of all dangers. We have not fallen apart during the boring daily speeches as the authorities hoped and wished, but rather have become a firm and unshakable community. That is the most valuable lesson of the year 2006. Under the pressure of events, we have to a large extent become accustomed to the horrors of modern school life.

I need not waste words about what this last year of secondary school means to us. The authorities have left no doubt of that. We are defending our honour and future. It is good for us to know that. It does not make us weak, but hard. A defeat would destroy us all. Truly this is a goal that is worth all the labor, sorrow and exertion of this struggle. Who would not want to accept them, no matter how difficult it might seem! They are the prerequisites for our coming freedom from all the chains, for the salvation of all of civilized Hua Yi. If I am asked what the primary virtue that will lead us to victory is, I can give but one answer: loyalty to ourselves and loyalty to our vision of the world. Endurance is the most important thing. We must fight courageously and intelligently for our existence. But that is not enough.

When events intensify and march with giant steps to their culmination, racing toward the crisis, the main thing is that the teachers and students keep their nerve, stubbornly and persistently overcoming dangers and difficulties, letting nothing distract them from the continuation of the course. Suddenly one day the clouds that hid the sun will clear and the sky will again be bright. So it will be in this struggle, too.

What should I say at the end of this almost concluded stormy year to thank the whole class for its devotion, hard work, loyalty and sacrifice, for its bravery, its contribution of intelligence and blood? I do not know where to begin or where to stop. We have outdone ourselves. In the countless sorrows and difficulties of everyday life during the struggle, particularly in the areas affected by extremist disciplinarian sanctions, we have proven ourselves time and time again. This is a great honor, and it far surpasses what is demanded of the Hua Yian people in general. Here, too, we have proven that we remain a class of elites.

The year 2007 will find us ready. In the end it will open the way for us to the future. With such teachers as we have and such students as we are and always will be, who can doubt our victory? What we won in the first half of upper secondary by bravery and determination we will build upon and achieve victory in the second half. That we will do with all the strength of our heart. Who amongst us does not know why?
